A week today I visited London to attend Scott Kelby's Reloaded tour, a follow up to his outstanding seminar series Shoot Like a Pro which took place last year. The Shoot Like a Pro (and Reloaded) tours are based off his award winning series of Digital Photography books, but now in seminar form which is touring nationally and internationally.
Having missed last years tour, as soon as I found out about the Reloaded tour (thanks to Mr Dave Clayton) I just had to go to this one. Luckily I refreshed the tour page (over at KelbyOneLive.com) every day to make sure I wouldn't miss the opportunity to buy a ticket and low-and-behold I got myself a ticket to his tour. I was thrilled to pieces! Having first learnt so much from Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski and Dave Cross from Photoshop User TV over 10 years ago, I couldn't believe I was finally going to see his tour and meet Scott in person. A dream that was going to come true.
Fast forward a few months and it's the day of the seminar. Not only are we in London, but we're in central London right outside Westminster Abbey and Big Ben; the perfect location for us photographers! I get there bright and early, where I'm greeted by some of the KelbyOne team handing out free goodies (Photoshop User Magazine no less) and telling us about the extremely good offer for the KelbyOne service (if I wasn't a member already, I would have snagged that offer up!). I advise anyone and everyone to purchase the subscription for KelbyOne, I can't stress enough how fantastic the video content and training is. If you're an amateur or season pro, KelbyOne has something for everyone in any genre. Whether you're looking to get into a new field, enhance your Lightroom skills, learn new tricks on Photoshop or learn more about the business side of photography; KelbyOne is for everyone.
I take my seat and see three very familiar faces (Dave Clayton, Glyn Dewis and Brad Moore), of course I had to say hello and couldn't pass up the opportunity to get Glyn to sign his book for me. Side note: If you don't have Glyn's book, go to Amazon and buy it now! It was so great to finally meet him, having been a fan since his seminar at The Photography Show in 2013. It was wonderful to talk to him and ask him lots of questions, it's great to do it in person. Glyn also introduced me to Brad who I know only too well from The Grid plus many other KelbyOne mediums, he also happens to be Scott's assistant. It was great to chat to them both about Photoshop World which I hope to attend in the next year or two (another dream of mine). Dave was also there and I couldn't wait to chat to him about everything and anything. Dave is one of those people I instantly clicked with since I saw him back in March for this years Photography Show. It's thanks to him that I've been more engaged with the Kelby community and without him I wouldn't have been introduced to some of my favourite photographers.
After all the talking, signing of books and picture taking, it was time for the event; Scott Kelby's Shoot Like a Pro: Reloaded seminar! I was so excited and couldn't wait to fill my brain with information! The seminar was split up into 5 sections; The Secret Sauce, Scott’s 7-Point System For Lightroom (Or Camera Raw), Really Great Lighting On A Really Tight Budget, The Stuff They Don’t Tell You, Photo Recipes: A Cookbook Of Looks (And Exactly How To Create Them). Each section was well paced, well planned and well done. There was so much information packed in and wasn't overwhelming at all. Better yet, we were able to listen to everything Scott said, with a great presentation and plenty of video tutorials (and a live demonstration) thrown in. This really broke up the learning into manageable chunks, I took away so much valuable information that I've already put into practice. The seminar was fun and educational, two words that probably shouldn't be in the same sentence, but that's the kind of teaching Scott Kelby does. That is why I've been following the company since I first came across it.
Throughout lunch and every single break, Scott allowed us to go up to the stage and meet him; fans got to ask questions, chat to him and have him sign their books. I got to do just that, he was such a humble and down to Earth guy. To top it off, he recognised me! What a joy! We had a great chat about his time in London and I was lucky enough to get to see his new book that he has been working on, The Great Indoors. I will definitely be pre-ordering this! A wonderful book of indoor architecture from museums, cathedrals, libraries, restaurants, palaces to name a few. To be able to look through the prototype book was an honour and the imagery was stunning, I cannot wait for this to be released. He was good enough to sign my book and have a few photos taken with me. I later went on to win a t-shirt and have another photo with him. What an honour and pleasure to have met someone that has inspired and encouraged my love for Photoshop and photography. Without his Photoshop User TV show, I wouldn't be in this career, I have him to thank!
There was so much love, laughter and emotion in this event that it left me motivated and inspired. I came away feeling so happy, energetic and feeling pumped to get back in the field and get shooting again. I would advise everyone and anyone to head to a KelbyOne tour, they are invaluable to your learning process and you'll become a better photographer because of it. You'll also receive a Seminar Workbook which means you won't have to take notes during the event, everything is in this workbook where you can read through everything again and again. A fantastic way of allowing attendees to sit through the seminar and listen (and laugh) and really engage with the information.
What a fantastic day! Where do I sign up for next year?
I'd like to take the time to thank Scott, Brad, everyone at KelbyOne, Glyn & Dave for such an amazing day and for inspiring me!
