Over the last month or so I've been speaking with Jonny Sullens, Head of Events for Future Plc. He's running the Photography Show again this year and I thought to promote the show to my followers I'd put together an interview with Jonny, so he can inform all of you guys just how fantastic 2015's show is going to be.
Tell us about the Photography Show. What's it all about?
Very simply, the Photography Show is a massive playground for photographers and takes place at the NEC in Birmingham. There are over 250 companies showcasing the very latest photography equipment and innovation (including every major camera manufacturer), there will be over 500 sessions designed to help you become a better photographer or photography business and some of the showfloor-only specials from our retailers are unmatchable.
Who's it for?
Photographers of any level. It doesn't matter whether you are a seasoned pro or a complete beginner the show is full of relevant companies, talks and experiences.
What can we expect over the 4 days?
The great thing about the show is that there is so much going on that you can come to the show with different objectives from a friend or colleague and they will all be met. If you want to try out a specific lens then no problem. If you want to learn from leading photographers then no problem. If you came to buy a new tripod then no problem. If you want to meet and network with other photographers then no problem. The free app (search the Photography Show 2015) helps you plan your visit and make the most of your day, or days, at the show.
What's new for 2015?
We will freshen up the show each year and in 2015 we have introduced a StreetScape Theatre to profile street photography. We have introduced the FilmMaker Theatre to show photographers how to better use the video capabilities of their cameras. We are in a new hall (hall 5 at the NEC) and have added a welcome area as well as a lot of restaurant seating to cope with the lunchtime rush. There is also a beginners programme on the Saturday and Sunday to help those photographers at the beginning of their journey get to grip with the basics as quickly as possible. More photos are being taken than ever before due to the rise of the smartphone and at the Mobileography Theatre, visitors will be able to learn the latest techniques as well as seem some of the latest add on lenses etc.
What are the benefits of attending? Why should we go?
If you are serious about photography as a hobby or as a professional then you must go. You will find all the inspiration, equipment, contacts and services to help you get to the next level in your photography or business.
Who will be exhibiting there?
Over 250 companies will have stands and the major new exhibitors for 2015 include Sony, Leica and Pentax. The groundbreaking Lytro camera will also be exhibited alongside a who's who of photography suppliers and retailers including Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Manfrotto, Hasselblad, Olympus, Calumet, CameraWorld, London Camera Exchange, Loxley Colour, Adobe. The full list of exhibitors can be found here.
What can we learn?
Again, there is an incredible variety of sessions on offer. Whether it is retouching with Adobe in their 150 seat theatre, how to mount and frame your pictures in the DIY Framing workshops, better garden photography in the IGPOTY garden or how to build your creative team with the MPA - the choice is almost endless.
Will there be competitions, discounts throughout the show from the exhibitors?
Undoubtedly. The Photography Show will see deals on equipment that are impossible to find elsewhere.
What's one thing attendees mustn't miss?
If I had to choose one I guess it would be Don McCullin on the Tuesday.
Are you putting on any more photography events this year / in the future?
Yes, we also have a series smaller roadshows called PhotoLive that will run in London, Leeds, Bath and Birmingham. These are designed for keen amateur photographers looking to improve and visitors can choose from a wide variety of sessions from leading pro photographers.
